I will be participating in Cambridge Sustainability Residency 2016 researching pashmina fabric. The themes this year are INSULATION and GROWTH. My project (FAST FIBER: Pashmina) will highlight challenges to sustaining Pashmina textile tradition and insulating it from global/political/commercial pressure, the dilution and mis-marking of the Pashmina label, and the subsequent growth of fast fashion, imitation Pashmina fabric.
The artistic component of my research is to hang samples of fake and/or real Pashmina fabric in clear folios for participants to touch and/or flame test. Common materials in fake Pashminas are viscose and acrylic.
