SHREDDED FLAG
(CHARLOTTESVILLE)
Ink and thread on paper
9 x 11 inches

[private collection, Washington DC]

Although I created this piece in response to the divisive Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville VA, it remains relevant. The US is in a State of Emergency; we are a frayed and fraying nation.

Ink studies for SHREDDED FLAG Charlottesville (ELECTORAL COLLEGE VOTE)

These drawings are preparatory studies for the finished piece, SHREDDED FLAG (Charlottesville). Done quickly, with ink on paper, the studies show several variations of the shredded texture and ragged feeling I was trying to achieve. In the finished piece, I ended up making the blue darker and less saturated to better match the real flag and adding lines of red thread to mimic the stripes.
